1948

A eightteen year old Olivia Beals is walking home from school, in no particular hurry to get back to the orphanage, she ducks into the library and hides in the stacks. Reading F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, when her head started to pound steadily and got progressively worse. Next thing she knew she was standing outside an office looking in during the late night hours of a single lamp providing light for a man at one of two desk, heavy into typing on his typewriter that she couldn't recognize and everything was oddly different looking, she looked around and found a newspaper on the desk beside her, lighting flashed with a huge rumble of thunder, as she saw the date January 14th, 1975. She fainted dead on the spot.

1975

She woke to the feeling of a cool clothe being patted over her face, as her eyes started to flutter open, she heard a brisk tone of a man, and there he was kneeling beside her-whilst she lay upon a leather sofa-looking at her with concern deep within the most beautiful mixture of deep green with little flicks of pale blue that gave the set of eyes the transparent view into this gentle man's soul. She tried sitting up and telling him of the bad dream she just had, he urged her carefully back down upon the couch as he giggled that it was no joke. He offered her a glass of water, they both feel into a comfortable conversation, that somewhere down the line fell silent as the man took on a very dark/serious look and soon a tear fell from his eye. Livia leaned over and wiped it away and the next thing she knew she was was out of breath and sweaty...much like he was. As they readjusted their clothing, Livia asked why he got to upset earlier, he said that his wife and him were having difficulties at home and his wife went back home to her parents to consider a divorce. Somewhere a long the line, he turned his back on her to get his jacket, and when he turned back around she was gone again. But, his wife was standing in the doorway and she was crying and looked pissed and sad all the same time. Apparently, she and her entire family (plus, the husband) were devout Catholics...she couldn't divorce him and she couldn't have an abortion, she was pregnant, and coming home-but, she saw that he had been with that girl.

1948-

Livia tripped going down the stairs to her basement room she shared with the rest of the foster kids packed into the house and the slants were put into the coldest and darkest area of the entire place. She got herself feed at a very early morning hour, cleaned up and into bed.

Restless nights became habit, soon she discovered she was pregnant, and she hid it very well for the next nine months. When she had her first contraction pain, that's when she found herself on a couch in a warm home, another pregnant woman was pouring herself her first glass of brandy for the evening...this woman had a cigarette dangling from her lips and by all appearances had the body language of a woman who had been making a habit of this for a very very long time. But, the cigarette came falling out of her lips, the empty glass shattered onto the floor and the canister was slammed down heavily onto the table with the cap left off, as the woman stumbled backwards with her hand over her stomach....water came pouring out from between her legs extinguishing the cigarette. Livia immediately jumped to action, she caught the woman, and upon instructions helped the woman up to her bedroom and called a mid-wife that was there in less than half-an-hour.

The woman recognized Livia just before labor actually began, she started cussing Livia out for being in her house, a slut that slept with her husband, but soon the woman delivered a baby girl that was still-born. The torrent of emotions slammed at Livia caused her to break water and go into full tilt labor herself...she was moved into the nursery where it was already set up for baby girl to have everything she could ever really need and would feel loved, adored, and cared for.....everything Livia wish she had growing up. But, she was laid upon a single wide bed and the bassinet was placed before her...as she began to push she saw the man that gave her this little girl watching and his wife held in his arms crying and still holding her dead daughter in her arms. Soon Livia held a wailing baby girl in her arms that had her father's eyes and a mixture of his hair and her's, this baby was going to be loved and adored...she knew it. Soon Livia fell into a fitful sleep, to quickly wake back up into a living nightmare she thought she left behind. The foster home back in 1948, while her daughter was in October 15th, 1975.......she hadn't even been able to name her precious little girl.

Late evening/October 15th, 1975-

The husband held his little bastard girl in his arms, smiling down at her, whilst his wife held onto their dead daughter looking on knowing the child in his arms would've been more loved, adored and cherished than the one in her's...she was thankful that the baby girl wouldn't have to live to see it. The man pronounced the little girl in his arms name was Katherine, but he started googleying “My beautiful little Katie”. Upon realizing his error in forgetting about Katie's mother, he turned but there was no sign of Livia, the bed was still semi-warm, wet, covered in blood and winkles...the mid-wife was at the door trying to take their dead daughter from his wife...and could tell that she'd been at it for a very long while now, so there was no way Livia could've got past them, but she must've because she was gone.

Halloween 1975-

The man and his wife had buried their dead daughter, Olivia never returned, and somehow he got the mid-wife to agree to Katie being his and his wife's child. He took Katie out for her first ever Halloween Trick-or-Treat and she was just barely two whole weeks old, of course it was damp and chilly...but, they went with his next door neighbor, best friend, and co-worker that occupied the desk across from him at the newspaper office...and they were also taking his friend's two sons out, Dan who was like eight years old and his little brother Jack who was not quite six yet. Katie couldn't eat any candy so he didn't go up to the doors to collect candy for her, but he did spend a lot of time letting the two boys spend more time enthralled with his little girl than they were with getting candy...they never made it past their front door...which is kinda' good because otherwise Katie would've ended up pre-maturely sick. Both boys ended up getting into a scuffle over who'd be the one to get to marry this little girl that captured their “ewwww, girls got cutties” when they were all old enough to. That ended the evening.

As the years passed, Katie grew up adored and worshiped by her father, when he was around, he being a work-a-holic. Her mother was always distant and drunk more times than she cared to count. It all got to be par for course, sure her mother never hit her but she never cared about how Katie was doing in school, who she was hanging around with, nor how late she'd get in. Soon with her father always at work and her mother physically there but otherwise absent, Katie could only rely on herself...she excelled at English, Social Studies, and even an All-American track star; she had graduated Valedictorian from high school, got all kinds of full-ride scholarships to the Top Universities all over the nation. But, she stuck close to home, went to Berkley where she actually studied extra hard and long...and got a PhD in both English and Communications. She soon got a beat reporters job at the NBC affiliate in San Fransisco, never wondering too far from her precious father, who was so damn proud of his little girl. Soon she meet this associate lawyer named Olivia, when she was doing a report on a law firm whose partners were running shady business deals with some of their clients-that story helped bring that firm and it's dirty clients down, won her best news story of the year, but her new friend Livia took the opportunity and got in as an ADA. Years later, when Katie was only 24 years old did she meet Dan Vasser-Livia's newest boyfriend. Six-weeks later Dan and Livia sat her up with his brother Jack and soon they were doing everything together-well not everything, but you get the idea.

Katie had falling in-love with Dan the very first moment she met him, but he was goo-ga-ga over Livia. She covered the best she could, Jack for his part was never really aware of it and Jack could physically satisfy her and he was her ticket to seeing more of Dan-other than going out with just Livia and Dan, being the third-wheel, making it all that more obvious if she were stuck like that.

Then, it happened Dan had asked Livia to marry him in late 1997, and she endured all the traditions and BS-yet, it was eating her up inside. 1999 that's when Livia boarded a plane that crashed into the ocean and her body was never recovered. Livia made herself available to Dan, turning down jobs, neglecting Jack, but never ever taking advantage of the situation however if Dan would make a move she wouldn't stop. Soon coming home late into the night or even early mornings to find Jack pissed off and drunk and practically ripping her clothing off and raping her got to a point of fight or flight and she was being dragged down by yet another alcoholic in her life, she stuck around and tried to give him what he wanted but soon he nearly hit her but Dan was there to stop him. She packed her bags while Dan stood guard and gave Jack a what-for intervention. Katie went home with Dan that night and Dan slept on the couch for the next several weeks...never demanding she find a place of her own, declaring he always felt better with her around. Jack finally hit rock bottom, messed up on the job, got suspended, ended up on suicide watch in the Psych-Ward of the local hospital, and finally admitting he had a problem went straight into rehab after his 72-hour watch.

Jack was in rehab for three long months and somewhere in the middle of that...Dan and Livia finally slept together and they continued a wild relationship that started to calm down into something they both admitted to as love....they found a house, bought it, worked on it while they planned their wedding, and after they wed Dan carried Katie over the threshold for their very first night in their new home. Jack got out of rehab, found out about it, and except for familial obligations he stayed away due to the pain and hurt. Even to this day, Jack still has little trust of Dan and he still pines for Katie. Giving just one chance, just one, he'd prove himself to her and if Dan so much as send Katie packing with Zack for a legal separation...he'd be there......he'd be Uncle Jack to Zack but he'd love Zack as if he was his very own, hell Zack was supposed be his, if Dan hadn't happened. Unfortunately, of all the bad patches that seemed to happen in that marriage...Katie would never leave Dan and Dan never left Katie. They both talked and learned to grow and be better and that just eats Jack up all the more. Zack was conceived when Katie got promoted to an anchor chair in the prime news time for TV, that is. Katie enjoyed the anchor chair for eight and half full months before she left the station altogether to give birth and be a full time mother, to her and Dan's son.....the boy was supposed to be Jack's. Jack loves his nephew but how he wishes the boy was his son and not Dan's. However, now that Dan is wigging out...Time-Traveling, yeah right.....it won't be long now.....Jack thinks he'll be the White-Knight this time, Jack will have her back, and Katie will have seen Dan for what he really is and she'll realize it's always been him, Jack that was always in her heart. Jack will finally get to prove to her exactly what a good man he's capable of.
